What is asset finance, and how does it work?

Asset finance is a form of business financing that allows a company to acquire or use assets for its operations without paying the total purchase price upfront. The assets can include equipment, machinery, vehicles, technology, and other tangible assets needed for business operations. Asset finance involves a lender providing funds to a business to purchase or lease the assets, and the business repays the borrowed amount, along with interest and fees, over an agreed-upon term.

There are several different types of asset finance, including:

  • Hire Purchase (HP)
In this type of asset finance, the business makes regular payments to the lender over a set term. Once all the payments are made, the company gains asset ownership.
  • Finance Lease
With a finance lease, the lender purchases the asset and leases it to the business for an agreed-upon term. At the end of the lease term, the business may have the option to purchase the asset, extend the lease, or return the asset to the lender.
  • Operating Lease
An operating lease is similar to a finance lease but typically has a shorter term and provides more flexibility. At the end of the lease term, the business can purchase the asset, extend the lease, or return the asset to the lender.
  • Chattel Mortgage
In a chattel mortgage, the business takes ownership of the asset from the outset, and the lender takes a mortgage over the asset as security. The company repays the loan over an agreed-upon term, and once all the payments are made, the mortgage is removed, and the business gains clear ownership of the asset.

Businesses typically use asset finance to acquire essential assets for their operations without tying up a significant amount of capital upfront. It can help companies manage their cash flow, spread the cost of assets over time, and access the assets they need to grow and operate efficiently. The terms, interest rates, fees, and repayment schedules associated with asset finance can vary depending on the lender, type of asset, and the borrower’s creditworthiness. It’s important to carefully review and understand the terms and conditions of any asset finance arrangement before entering it. Consulting with a financial advisor or seeking professional advice can help determine if asset finance suits your business and understand how it works in your situation.
